Fino Alla Fine: Juventus Board of Directors, 2006

Traditional Crisis Committee

About The Committee

Arguably no club in Italy has been more of an embodiment of the spirit of football (calcio) in the nation than that of Juventus FC. To many both inside and outside the world of football, they’re considered to be the most storied club in all of Italian football, if not in Europe. By May of 2006, things seemed to have been business as usual for Juventus' continued run of dominance. Having finished 15 points clear of second in the Serie A, the top flight of Italian football, Juventus secured a historic 29th league title to their name by season's end. However, while Juventus handled football on the outside without trouble, prosecutors were only beginning to uncover a crisis that would go on to shake the core of Italian football as they had known it.

At the same time, Italian state prosecutors discovered alleged audio transcripts that suggested both Juventus general director Luciano Moggi and CEO Antonio Giraudo had conversations with many different Italian football officials to influence referee designations during the 2004–05 and 2005-06 seasons. The outbreak of what was then termed as Calciopoli proved to be beyond damaging for the core of Juventus FC. The entire previous board of directors in the club resigned in the wake of the scandal by the 14th of May, shortly after the end of the 2005-06 season, and by July of 2006, the FIGC's Federal Court of Justice ordered Juventus to be relegated to the Serie B for the first time in their history, with a 30-point reduction (later reduced to only 9), as well as having their past two Serie A titles officially stripped from their record.

Delegates in this committee will step up as newly appointed members and representatives of the Board of Directors of Juventus FC with the task of bringing the club back to the top flight of Italian football by the end of the 2006-07 season, beginning exactly 10 days before the beginning of the upcoming Serie B season (August 30th, 2006). While results are dependent on how much a shadow of Juventus' squad are ready to throw on the pitch for La Vecchia Signora, expect the season to come ahead filled with issues concerning everything else that comes with running a football club in crisis, including trying to restore public faith in the team, navigating a whole host of financial difficulties bound to be addressed within committee, and mitigating their way past further legal action from the continued investigation of the Calciopoli scandal.

The fate of Juventus as a football club of its magnitude rests on a quick recovery back to the standards it once used to hold not too long ago as a team, potentially offering a redefined, self-confident powerhouse of Italian football reminding the football world once again, who Juventus is, or another tragic case in a long line of stories of how corruption and ineptitude led to the decay of what was once a football club people would pour their hearts out, week in and week out, to support.
