Breaking the Ice: The Arctic Circle, 2030

Non-Traditional Crisis Committee

About The Committee

No need for icebreakers in this committee! The year is 2030, and reckless fossil fuel use, overdevelopment, and lack of action from international leadership have led to sea ice in the Arctic Circle melting at rates never seen before. Without a clear response, sea levels are set to rise dramatically and threaten over a billion people around the world. Even worse, it will accelerate global warming and set the planet on an unstoppable course of catastrophe with no way to stop it.

The uncovering of the new Northern Ocean also provides opportunities in the form of shipping lanes, territorial control, and billions of dollars in rare minerals and resources. Major countries, companies, and non-government organizations (NGOs) are already vying for control over this rapidly growing area. With tensions rising between major global powers, and international bodies largely silent, actors around the world are unsure if these events are building up to collaboration, competition, or war.

Delegates will have to work together to save the Arctic and the world. Through unique committee mechanics, they will tackle problems, uncover what lies beneath the ice, and rupture time itself to fundamentally change the Arctic forever. Delegates hold the future – and the past – in their hands, with the fate of humanity resting on their shoulders. No pressure….

This is a Non-Traditional Crisis Committee. Delegates are encouraged to sign up for this committee only if they have experience competing on the crisis-style collegiate circuit.

Crisis Director

Jack Groban

Jack Groban is a third-year student from the Washington, DC area pursuing majors in Biology and Political Science with minors in Chemistry and Spanish. This is his third year with Miami Model United Nations, and eighth year since he started Model UN. You may recognize him from 305MUN III, where he served as chair in the Ad-Hoc Committee of the Secretary-General. Jack is also active on the travel circuit, competing in various iterations of crisis committees.

Outside of Model UN, you will often find Jack exploring the streets of Miami, looking for tickets to the next house music concert, or watching the most recent Formula 1 highlights. Jack is also a competitor on the UM Mock Trial team, a student senator, and a brother in the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. Jack will never get tired of the mild Miami winters and sunny climate, and you’ll often see him out for a run or by the campus pool catching a tan

Jack is incredibly excited for 305MUN IV, and can’t wait to treat delegates to an engaging, creative, and uniquely nontraditional crisis experience. Feel free to reach out with questions or concerns at jgg1933@miami.edu
